Cecil the Lion made headlines last week after he was hunted and killed by an American dentist, Dr. Walter Palmer who then received an onslaught of criticism on social media. Palmer, who paid a considerable sum for the hunt, claimed that he had no idea that the Zimbabwe lion was protected.
Cecil was a well-loved lion, adored for his calm demeanor and unfazed attitude towards spectators. Although this story was widely publicized, it is not something unusual. Cecil is one of the hundreds of lions hunted in Africa each year.
Many are hopeful that Cecil’s untimely death will bring more awareness to wildlife issues. In fact, a few airline companies have already banned shipment of illegally hunted animals or hunting trophies.
