Big words make you smart don’t they? Actually, they’re not. Words are fun but are often misused. Scintillate, scintillate, asteroid minific. Sing this to your baby and he’ll probably get out of the crib and play more. There’s probably a reason why the nursery rhyme always stayed as “Twinkle, twinkle little star” and not as “Scintillate, scintillate, asteroid minific.”
Sure, the thesaurus makes you look smart, but it actually makes you dumber at the same time. It helps you increase your vocabulary but words are often misused. Big words make you a good writer but not a good speaker. If there’s someone to thank, it’s Mr. Thesaurus.
Words are used so that communication is effective. Do everything you can to write and speak as clearly as possible. It makes you sound smarter when you’re able to use language properly, language that is easy for everyone to understand.
